A 2012 summer signing from boyhood club Cologne, Podolski joined Arsenal and became a fan favourite by scoring 16 times and registering 11 assists in his first season at the Emirates.

Football: Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino charged for improper conduct

LONDON (AFP) - Tottenham Hotspur manager Mauricio Pochettino was charged with improper conduct by the Football Association on Monday (Feb 26) following his side's defeat to Burnley on Saturday.
The Argentinian had engaged in a lengthy and heated exchange with referee Mike Dean after the full-time whistle at Turf Moor on Saturday.
Pochettino had watched his men slip to a 2-1 defeat, which dented their hopes of winning the Premier League title.
A statement from the FA read: "Mauricio Pochettino has been charged with two breaches of FA Rule E3 following the game against Burnley on Saturday.
"It is alleged the Tottenham manager's language and/or behaviour at the end of the fixture - both on the pitch and in or around the tunnel area - amounted to improper conduct.
"He has until 6pm on February 28, 2019 to respond to the charge."
Pochettino did not reveal what was said or the reason for the strength of his feelings, with the only contentious decision appearing to be the awarding of a corner that led to Chris Wood's opening goal for Burnley.

The outburst was out of character for Pochettino, who said before the charge was announced he would not contest any disciplinary action, admitting he may have "crossed the line".
Third-placed Spurs are on 60 points, five points behind Manchester City and six adrift of leaders Liverpool. All three sides have played 27 games.

Celtic captain Scott Brown has also been charged for ‘not acting in the best interests of association football’.

Brown – who raised his arms in triumph in the direction of the Rangers fans immediately after the 2-1 victory – has been accused of breaching a rule which states players, coaches and officials should “act in the best interests of association football”.

Rule 77 also references “improper” behaviour and using “threatening, abusive, indecent or insulting words or behaviour” and carries a minimum two-match suspension for players.

Celtic later declared in a brief statement that they would “defend these charges vigorously”.

He was involved in a fracas with Alfredo Morelos, who subsequently was sent off for elbowing the Celtic man.

The Celtic captain and both clubs have until Wednesday to respond to their charges with hearings pencilled in for May 2 for all four cases.

Meanwhile Ryan Kent, who raised his hand at Brown later in the match had his two-match ban upheld by the Scottish Football Association.

Following the final whistle, Andy Halliday confronted the Celtic captain after he celebrated in front of the Rangers fans. Halliday was also sent off.

Both clubs have also received Scottish Football Association disciplinary charges relating to the confrontation immediately after the game.

Manchester City transfer news: Sporting Lisbon’s Bruno Fernandes will NOT be signing for Pep Guardiola’s men this summer

Manchester City are not interested in signing Sporting Lisbon midfielder Bruno Fernandes, according to reports.

The Manchester Evening News claim that club sources have notified them that the 24-year-old is not a transfer target this summer, and thus will not be entering into talks with his representatives.

Sporting’s Bruno Fernandes has scored 31 goals in all competitions so far this season

Sporting’s Bruno Fernandes has scored 31 goals in all competitions so far this season

The Sporting midfielder has been heavily linked with a move to the reigning Premier League champions this summer, with Pep Guardiola looking to strengthen his numbers in midfield.

Guardiola is believed to be looking for cover for Fernandinho, while Ilkay Gundogan could also depart in the close season.

City ace Bernardo Silva had even talked Fernandes up in the media recently, labelling him a ‘great player’ and adding: “He has made a fantastic season with many goals, many assists that are not normal for a player of his position.

“He has the spearhead numbers and we will see what happens at the end of the season.

“[He is a] player who can play in other championships.”

City had previously not commented on any links with the midfielder, but the recent revelations appear to have put any speculation regarding a move for Fernandes to bed.

The club have also shelved plans to sign a left-back this summer, despite ongoing concerns about the position owing to Benjamin Mendy’s fitness concerns.

Guardiola had previously said City would be looking to sign a player in that position, but those plans now appear to have changed.

Manchester City 1-0 Brighton: Gabriel Jesus’ early strike sends Citizens to FA Cup final

Gabriel Jesus’ early header proved the difference as quadruple-chasing Manchester City reached the FA Cup final with a 1-0 win over Brighton.

Controversy erupted when City’s Kyle Walker escaped a red card after a VAR review of a coming together with Alireza Jahanbakhsh but, despite resisting further damage, Brighton could not find a way back.

Chris Hughton’s men applied plenty of pressure in the second half, with Aymeric Laporte producing a fine clearance to deny Glenn Murray but City managed the game well.

Raheem Sterling also had three good chances to make the game safe.

City made a confident start, and while Brighton may have been pleased to see that Sergio Aguero had failed to shake off a knock, they were soon left reeling by his deputy.

Walker received a yellow card after going head to head with Jahanbakhsh

Just four minutes of mostly City-controlled play had elapsed when De Bruyne bent a delicious cross behind the Seagulls defence that sat up invitingly for Jesus to meet with a powerful diving header.

Brighton’s fans, who outnumbered those from City and were clearly savouring the occasion, were immediately silenced. The team were similarly deflated and it took some time for them to recover.

Yet City did not go in immediate search of the killer blow. With another big date in the Champions League at Tottenham on Tuesday they seemed content to play patiently and it did not make for a great spectacle.

While Brighton had a half-chance through Anthony Knockaert and David Silva had a shot blocked, the main talking point of the first half came when Walker and Jahanbakhsh clashed.

It was a tough watch for Pep Guardiola at times

4

It was a tough watch for Pep Guardiola at times

The pair chased a ball into the City area, with Walker reacting badly to being pushed in the back. After going head to head, Walker made the next move, appearing to push forcibly towards Jahanbakhsh.

Referee Anthony Taylor booked the City player but there was a VAR check for a potential red card. Eventually, Walker was given the benefit of the doubt but bickering between the players continued for some time afterwards.

It was perhaps with that in mind that City boss Pep Guardiola removed Walker at the interval, although the England full-back had also required treatment towards the end of the first half.

With left-back Oleksandr Zinchenko out injured and Benjamin Mendy making his first start since November in his place – which had been a surprise – City perhaps showed potential vulnerabilities on the flanks.

Jesus’ goal proved crucial

4

Yet Brighton could not expose them further despite a positive start to the second period.

Pressure almost paid off when Shane Duffy headed into the danger area from a corner, while Murray looked a certain scorer as the ball dropped invitingly in front of goal, only for Laporte to intervene and hack over the bar.

That prompted a response from City and Sterling brought a fine save out of Mathew Ryan with a curling effort from outside the box.

The England star also had an effort blocked by Lewis Dunk before forcing another save from Ryan in the closing moments.

In Brighton’s final flurry, Knockhaert appealed for a penalty after a clash with Laporte but nothing was given.

Raul Jimenez: Wolves complete permanent signing of on-loan forward for club-record fee

Raul Jimenez has completed a permanent move to Wolves for a club-record fee, the Premier League side have confirmed.

Jimenez, the Mexico forward, has spent the season on loan at Molineux having joined on a year-long deal from Benfica last summer.

He has scored 15 goals in 37 games for Nuno’s side – also chipping in with three assists – as Wolves battle to finish seventh in the Premier League and also hope to book their place in the FA Cup final.

They take on Watford this weekend in the second semi-final, with the victor facing either Manchester City or Brighton in the Wembley showpiece.

Wolves had the option to sign Jimenez on a permanent basis written into their loan deal for the 27-year-old, and they are believed to have paid £32million to secure his signature.

Jimenez has put pen to paper on a four-year deal with the Midlands club.

He becomes Wanderers’ most expensive signing ever surpassing previous record holder Adama Traore, who joined the club last summer for £18million.

The forward said: â€Å“It’s a great honour for me to now be a permanent member of the team. I’m very happy for this permanent deal as I feel that being at Wolves suits me.

â€Å“I’ve enjoyed my time here, I enjoy playing in the pitch and, along with all my teammates, we try our best in all the matches to win.

â€Å“Since I’ve arrived here it’s all been so good. We’ve had some good moments, some bad moments; but the best ones have been so good and I’m very happy for that.”

Kevin Thelwell, the club’s sporting director, added: â€Å“The impact Raul has made during his short time at the club has been fantastic and we’re delighted that he’ll be part of the club’s long-term future.

â€Å“From the second he walked through the door, he settled straight into the group, and that reflects in his performance, with Raul providing assists and overall selfless performances, as well as obviously goals.

â€Å“His goals in the Premier League and FA Cup have been vital to this season’s success and we’re looking forward to seeing him contribute even more during what will be an exciting end to the season in both competitions.

â€Å“Raul’s permanent signing shows the ambition of this football club and the determination to make sure the future is an exciting one.”

Jimenez, who has made 71 appearances for Mexico, began his career with Club America in his homeland before moving to Europe in 2014 to join Atletico Madrid.

He left after a single season in Spain for Benfica, spending three years with the Portuguese outfit until completing his loan switch to Wolves last summer.
