Champions League final: Sean Cox congratulates Liverpool for winning European Cup with defeat of Tottenham

A message congratulating Liverpool for winning the Champions League has been sent on behalf of Sean Cox, the Reds fan left with life-changing injuries after being assaulted outside Anfield last year.

Mr Cox was attacked by a Roma supporter before Liverpool’s home Champions League semi-final last April, with the father of three from Dunboyne in County Meath needing emergency surgery.

He was in a coma for six weeks following the attack and was later transferred to a rehabilitation centre. He left care for the first time a couple of months ago, and was allowed home on Saturday night to watch the showpiece European fixture.

And Mr Cox was ‘overjoyed’ as Liverpool defeated Tottenham 2-0 to win their sixth European Cup.

“On Sean’s behalf, I want to offer our heartfelt congratulations to Liverpool Football Club on winning the Champions League,’ Mr Cox’s wife, Martina, told RTE.

“The club and its fans have taken Sean, our family and I into their hearts since Sean’s attack last year.

“Nobody could be happier than the Cox family for Jurgen Klopp, his players and the wonderful Liverpool fans.

“Sean watched the game with us at home, proudly wearing a signed Liverpool jersey sent to him by the club’s CEO Peter Moore last week.

“He was overjoyed when the final whistle blew and Liverpool were crowned champions.”

Mohamed Salah opened the scoring for Liverpool inside the first two minutes, with Divock Origi adding a late second for the Reds.

Jurgen Klopp and his players were treated to a hero’s welcome as they returned to Merseyside on Sunday, with hundreds of thousands of Liverpool supporters lining the streets to celebrate the European success.
