Liverpool could miss out on £13.2MILLION this summer if Manchester United sign former hero Philippe Coutinho from Barcelona.
The Red Devils have been linked with a move for the 26-year-old since the start of 2019 as his troubles have continued in Catalonia.
Coutinho moved from Anfield to Spain in a £145m deal in January 2018, but only £106m of that was transferred up front.
The remaining £39million is made up of a series of complicated add-ons relating to appearances and on-field success for the Brazil international, according to the Guardian.
Every time the playmaker makes 25 appearances for the blaugrana, the LaLiga champions have to pay £4.4.m to Liverpool – ceasing once he hits 110.
So far, he has made 74 appearances for the club, meaning the Reds have received half of the potential £17.6m.
Should Ernesto Valverde leave him out of Barca’s final two league matches and the Copa del Rey final before selling him this summer, Barcelona could avoid paying the next £4.4m instalment; meaning Liverpool miss out on £8.8m.
Another add-on involved in the contract relates to Barcelona’s progression into the Champions League, potentially a sore subject for the Catalonians.
The deal stated Barca would pay Liverpool an extra £4.4m if they secured their place in Europe’s elite club competition during Coutinho’s first two seasons at Camp Nou.
They of course will have paid the first £4.4m for qualifying for this season but – although they will definitely be in it next year – Barcelona may not have paid the extra £4.4m just yet, meaning Liverpool could miss out on £13.2m should Coutinho leave this summer.
However, because Coutinho played his part in getting the Spaniards there, they should pay Liverpool the next £4.4m.
The Anfield club will definitely miss out on a further £4.4m because of the minor miracle they performed on Merseyside.
Barcelona agreed to pay the Reds the extras IF they won the Champions League in either of Coutinho’s first two seasons at Nou Camp.
