Harry Redknapp has revealed to talkSPORT Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy told him manager Mauricio Pochettino is ‘under no pressure to win anything’ at the club.
The former Spurs boss joined the Sports Breakfast ahead of the club’s opening game at their new stadium on Wednesday against Crystal Palace.
It promises to be an exciting day for the north Londoners, but their preparations for the historic game have not been ideal.
Tottenham have been labelled ‘bottle jobs’ once again after going five games without victory in the Premier League, which has seen their previously comfortable hold on a top-four spot crumble to nothing.
Sunday’s defeat to Liverpool has seen Spurs slip to fourth place, level on points with Manchester United in fifth and only one point above Chelsea in sixth.
Redknapp says it would be a ‘disastrous season’ if the club fail to claim a top-four finish.
And yet, while other managers would be under the spotlight for such a collapse of form, he insists Pochettino will face no such pressure while he is in charge at Spurs.
“For whatever reason at the moment Tottenham have just gone through one of those spells again when the crunch time times and they can’t get the results they need – but I don’t see Pochettino coming under any pressure,†Redknapp told talkSPORT.

“I was at Anfield on Sunday and I spoke to Daniel Levy, and he said there’s no pressure on Pochettino to win anything.
“No one is pushing him or telling him, ‘we need a trophy’, or, ‘we need to do it this year’.
“But to drop out of the top four would be a disastrous season for Tottenham. I know they’re still in the Champions League, but they’ve got to finish in the top four, they need Champions League football again next season.
“It’s going to be tight now, with Arsenal winning last night, Manchester United coming strong and even Chelsea, they’re stuttering but still picked up a result at the weekend, somehow.
“It was only a few weeks ago when were saying ‘don’t write Spurs off in the title race, they’ve still got a chance of winning it’ and then, crash – that is a bad run of results, let’s not kid ourselves.
“I still think they will just about make it, but I wouldn’t put my life on it now. It’s going to be very tight.â€
Spurs kick off a new era at their £1billion stadium on Wednesday night, taking on Crystal Palace as they open the doors for a Premier League game for the first time.
Supporters are expected to bring a party atmosphere to north London – but Redknapp insists it won’t be a walk in the park against the Eagles.
“Tomorrow night won’t be easy,†he warned.
“Palace have got dangerous players – Zaha and Townsend – they can hurt you. It’s not going to be a gimme.
“It’s going to be a nervy night in a away. It’s going to be a great atmosphere and a celebration before the games starts, but once the whistle goes it could be a difficult game again for Tottenham.â€
Redknapp also fears the new stadium move could wipe out the ‘home advantage’ for Spurs for the remainder of the campaign.
Apart from a few training sessions, the new ground will be as unfamiliar to the Tottenham team as the Crystal Palace players on Wednesday.
“It’s not going to be the advantage it could be for Tottenham, that’s for sure,†the former boss said.
“The stadium is so important to a team. You create an atmosphere, the players are used to it, you come in on a match day and you know where everything is. It’s your ground, it’s your home.
“But this will be completely different. Really, both teams will go into it tomorrow night and it’ll be a brand new atmosphere for both of them.â€
