Pavel Pogrebnyak fined for remarks about black players in Russian national team

Former Fulham and Reading striker Pavel Pogrebnyak has been fined for his remarks about black players in the Russian national team.

Pogrebnyak, who made 33 appearances for Russia between 2006 and 2012, said he was opposed to the recent trend of non-Russian players receiving Russian passports with the view to representing the country and criticised the presence of black Krasnodar striker Ari in the Russia squad.

Speaking to tabloid Komsomolskaya Pravda, he said: â€Å“I don’t see the point of this. I do not understand at all why Ari received a Russian passport.

â€Å“It is laughable when a black player represents the Russian national side.

â€Å“Mario Fernandes is a top player. But we also have Igor Smolnikov in his position. We could make do without foreigners as well.”

The Russian Football Union ethics committee has fined Pogrebnyak 250,000 rubles (£2,938) for his comments.

His remarks were also blasted by Mikhail Fedotov, the human rights advisor to president Vladimir Putin, who claimed they â€Å“smacked of racism”.

â€Å“I believe that any football player who plays well and has Russian citizenship has a right to represent the Russian national side,” Fedotov told the TV channel Moscow 360.

â€Å“The colour of their skin, eyes, hair and everything else has no significance. This should be obvious to anyone.”
