Football: Madrid climb to third with vital win over Sevilla

MADRID (REUTERS) - Real Madrid earned a therapeutic 2-0 victory at home to Sevilla with late strikes from Casemiro and Luka Modric as Santiago Solari's stuttering side leapfrogged the Andalusians into third spot in La Liga on Saturday (Jan 19).
Brazilian midfielder Casemiro unleashed a stinging shot from outside the area which was too powerful for outstretched keeper Tomas Vaclik, giving the European champions a deserved lead in the 78th minute after they dominated the second half.
Teenage forward Vinicius Jr was again Madrid's most dangerous outlet and had come close to breaking the deadlock with a scooping shot that just crept wide of the post before Casemiro finally broke the deadlock.
Dani Ceballos, the match-winner in last week's scrappy 2-1 victory at Real Betis, had also earlier hammered the bar as Madrid took the game by the scruff of the neck at a rainy and cold Santiago Bernabeu after a drab first half of few chances.
Modric finally sealed the victory in stoppage time with a cool finish, giving Solari's team a second straight win after their poor start to 2019, having drawn at Villarreal and lost at home to Real Sociedad.
The victory saw Madrid climb to third place on 36 points, three ahead of Sevilla who have failed to win in their last four league outings, while Barcelona, who host Leganes on Sunday, are top with 43.

MAGNIFICENT PERFORMANCE

"We needed a game like this. It was a magnificent performance, we dominated every phase of the match," said Real captain Sergio Ramos.
"We scored the chances we needed to, we could have scored more but we're very happy. We really wanted to win emphatically in front of our own fans. We put them (Sevilla) under pressure from the first minute and we got our rewards. This was a vital win for us."
Solari again left out experienced left back Marcelo, in favour of youngster Sergio Reguilon, and Spain midfielder Isco but was boosted by the return of Lucas Vazquez from suspension and Karim Benzema, who wore a bandage on a fractured finger.
Benzema teed up Vinicius early in the game but the Brazilian fired straight at Vaclik.
Sevilla, who have lost momentum in the new year after making an impressive start to the season, had only one chance of note in the whole game, which left back Sergio Escudero put just wide of the near post.
Sevilla midfielder Pablo Sarabia criticised his side for not showing more ambition.
"We are not feeling good, the team is feeling very down because we tried to defend but we needed to offer more in the second half, we could barely get beyond their half," he said.
His team mate Ever Banega was even more critical, saying: "In the second half we were a disaster."

The stadium, which is home to League One side AFC Wimbledon, was sprayed with graffiti and suffered criminal damage as a result of the ultras from Paris.

According to BBC Radio 5Live reporter Jacqui Oatley, 45 police officers were forced to deal with a coach load of fans ahead of the Champions League clash.

On board the vehicle, officers found a knuckleduster, a box of knives and drugs. The hooligans in question are banned from all men’s and youth games involving the French club.

Met Police spokesperson told SunSport: “At approximately 08:00hrs on Thursday, 21 March police were called to reports of a group of Paris St Germain (PSG) supporters causing criminal damage at Kingsmeadow Stadium in Kingston.

“Officers attended but all those involved had left the scene.

“Later in the day, officers were made aware of sporadic instances of disorder involving PSG supporters at both Waterloo and Wimbledon stations.

“Those involved were identified and when they attended Kingsmeadow Stadium this evening they were stopped.

“A coach they travelled in was searched and weapons, including knives and knuckle dusters, were recovered along with class A drugs.

“One man from the coach was arrested for possession of class A drugs and the remaining passengers were escorted from the area by police.

Chelsea will miss Eden Hazard as much as Arsenal missed Thierry Henry, claims Tony Cascarino

Tony Cascarino has compared Eden Hazard̢۪s potential Chelsea departure to Thierry Henry̢۪s move away from Arsenal.

Hazard reminded the Blues what they will be missing if he leaves for Real Madrid this summer with a breathtaking display during the 2-0 victory over West Ham on Monday night.

The Belgian waltzed through the Hammers’ defence to score a wonderful solo goal, before doubling his tally with a fine strike late-on.

It was the kind of match-winning individualism that Stamford Bridge has become used to. After all, Hazard has been directly involved in 49 per cent of the club̢۪s Premier League goals this season.

Hazard was unstoppable against West Ham

2

Hazard was unstoppable against West Ham

But Chelsea boss Maurizio Sarri has admitted there is very little he can do to stop the 28-year-old from moving to Madrid if his heart is set on the Bernabeu.

Arsenal were equally powerless when Barcelona came knocking for club legend Henry in 2007, which signalled the beginning of a prolonged period of mediocrity for the Gunners.

And former Blues striker Cascarino, who expects Hazard to leave this summer, believes the potential move could have a similar effect.

â€Å“It will be as big a loss to a team as Thierry Henry was when he left to go to Barcelona,” he told talkSPORT.

â€Å“He [Hazard] is up there with the very best. If he gets you from a standing start and he stops, you’re in trouble. There aren’t many players I can say that about.

â€Å“He goes from zero to 50 in a split second, then he’s gone. He’ll go either way. How many players can go either way?

Henery’s departure hit Arsenal hard

2

Henery’s departure hit Arsenal hard

â€Å“You know he’s going to beat you. Take the first goal last night, there’s not much that any defender could do about that. The speed, acceleration, ability – if you go near him, you know it’s going to be a penalty.

â€Å“He is just a very talented boy.

â€Å“I do think he’ll leave this summer, it’s a consequence of his contract running down. [Zinendine] Zidane was his hero, so he will want to taste pastures new.”

Hazard, who has spent seven successful years in west London, has always remained open about his ‘dream’ of playing for Madrid one day.

And Cascarino argues it̢۪s fair enough for a player of his calibre to challenge himself at the top level.

â€Å“At least we’re not seeing a player down tools,” he added.

â€Å“We’re seeing a player play the best football he can.”

Royal Baby name latest: Adrian Durham believes Prince Harry and Meghan Markle should have called first child ‘Raheem’ instead of Archie

Adrian Durham believes Prince Harry and Meghan Markle should have named their first child ‘Raheem’.

The Manchester City midfielder was crowned the PFA Young Player of the Year last month after a fantastic season which has seen him score 17 Premier League goals.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have named their son Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor.

The couple’s @SussexRoyal Instagram account announced: “The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are pleased to announce they have named their first born child: Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor.

“This afternoon Their Royal Highnesses introduced Her Majesty The Queen to her eighth great-grandchild at Windsor Castle. The Duke of Edinburgh and The Duchess’ mother were also present for this special occasion.”

But after a tremendous 12 months for Sterling, the talkSPORT Drive host believes the Royal Baby should have been named after the Manchester City forward.

“Here’s what they should have called the Royal Baby; Raheem,” Durham said.

“I think that would have been perfect. Given Raheem Sterling and everything he has done and everything he’s doing right now – what a statement that would have been.

“Would have been perfect, in my opinion.

“Archie? Little bit boring, sorry. You can call your baby what you want.

“They’ve announced it on Instagram, so go a little bit step further.”

The duke and duchess’ son arrived on Monday May 6 at 5.26am, weighing 7lb 3oz.

Harry said, when announcing the birth, that the baby’s late arrival had given them longer to decide on a name.

“The baby is a little bit overdue, so we’ve had a little bit of time to think about it,” he said.

Among the bookmakers’ favourites were Alexander, Arthur, Albert, as well as James and Philip, while Spencer was a late favourite, but Archie was a surprise choice.

And the talkSPORT host believes the royal duo have missed a trick. He added: “Well I would have preferred Raheem, but as long as the baby is happy and everybody is healthy then fine.

“Fine I suppose, stick with your boring names that are in the Top 10.”

‘Look at Mesut Ozil…He’s League One’ – talkSPORT host Adrian Durham urges Leicester’s James Maddison NOT to join Arsenal

talkSPORT host Adrian Durham has issued an emotional plea to Leicester’s James Maddison – “Do not waste your talent by going to Arsenal!”

Maddison, 22, has risen the ranks of English football where he started at Coventry before moving to Championship club Norwich in February 2016.

He then got his move to the Premier League last summer when Leicester acquired him for a fee believed to be in the region of £20million.

The midfielder has enjoyed a good first season in the top flight and received his first call-up to the England side for their UEFA Nations League qualifiers against Croatia and Spain in November.

And now Maddison is being tipped for a move to north London as a replacement for Juventus-bound Aaron Ramsey.

Maddison to Arsenal is a good move for him in the eyes of many but Durham definitely doesn’t believe it would be a wise career move for the Leicester man.

So on Wednesday’s edition of Drivetime, Durham issued an emotional plea to Maddison to not go to the Emirates Stadium as he will end up like ‘League One’ Mesut Ozil!

Durham said: “I’m actually quite upset about this, I’m actually quite tearful, emotional about it and I want to make a plea to James Maddison.

“Do NOT go to Arsenal.

Durham is certain Arsenal is not the right club for Maddison…or anyone for that matter!

Durham is certain Arsenal is not the right club for Maddison…or anyone for that matter!

“Look at Mesut Ozil. Similar player but not as good as you are James but he was brilliant before then and look what happened!

“He goes and LOOK at him. He’s League One!

“Do not go to Arsenal, you will not level out. You will bottom out at Arsenal. It’s such a football vacuum.

“Why would you want to go there? You’ll be playing computer games all night and be too tired to play on a Saturday.

“It will be incredibly detrimental to your career.

“Look at you now – just imagine you’re at Arsenal and you’re putting on the shirt at the Emirates and compare when you first came to Leicester.

“You saw Wes Morgan behind you and you probably thought ‘really?’

“But you’ll be going to Arsenal and you’ll see Shkodran Mustafi. Then you’ll realise just how bad defenders can be!

“So James Maddison everything has been going really well – you’ve come from League Two and League One with Coventry and the Championship with Norwich, up to the Premier League, more than holding your own, one of the best English players around.

“Do not WASTE that talent by going to Arsenal.”

Amateur cup final abandoned as Wymeswold Reserves walk off pitch after Linford Harris suffers alleged racist abuse

The Leicestershire & Rutland County FA has launched an investigation after the Saturday Vase Final was abandoned when players walked off the pitch after their team-mate was the target of alleged racist abuse.

Wymeswold Reserves striker Linford Harris was sent off 12 minutes from the end of Wednesday’s match against Cosby UniteD Development, with a fan going on to abuse the forward.

This reportedly led to a confrontation between the players and some of the crowd, before the Wymeswold players walked off the pitch in protest.

The referee then abandoned the match.

Harris took to social media after the match, writing on Twitter: “So sorry to witness and suffer such racism in this day and age, thanks everyone for the support. Appreciate everyone standing behind me. WE ARE ALL EQUAL. #SayNoToRacism.”

The Leicestershire & Rutland County FA confirmed they are investigating the incident.

A statement read: “We ask anyone who was present at the match to provide their observations by email to info@leicestershirefa.com.

“Leicestershire & Rutland County FA will investigate all allegations related to this game and take the necessary discipline action. As this is now an ongoing investigation we will not be able to comment any further.”

Cosby announced they will support the FA throughout the investigation, while condemning abuse the club received in relation to the abusive individual. They insist the individual is not a Cosby supporter.

“Comments/abuse made to the club overnight that the individual is a Cosby supporter are wide of the mark. Good luck to Wymeswold for the rest of the season.”

This is the latest in a series of racist incidents which have occurred over the past season, with calls for serious action to be taken in the wake of England players being abused by Montenegro supporters during last month’s international break.

A number of players, managers and pundits have since backed the decision for teams to walk off the pitch should players be racially abused.

LOS ANGELES (AFP) - Former England and Manchester United football star Wayne Rooney scored three goals on Saturday (March 16) night to lead D.C. United to a crushing 5-0 victory over Real Salt Lake.
The 33-year-old registered his first three goals of the new season and also his first hat-trick since signing moving to Major League Soccer in July 2018. He now has five multi-goal games.
Lucas Rodriguez and Ulises Segura also scored for the hosts, who peppered the Salt Lake goal with 22 shots.
Goalkeeper Bill Hamid made two stops to earn his third straight shutout as D.C. United are the lone team to have not allowed a goal this season.
Rooney scored a penalty in the 34th minute and then added another with a chip shot over goalkeeper Nicholas Rimando in the 41st. He completed the hat-trick with a perfectly timed sliding score in the 65th minute.
Elsewhere, Uruguay international Nicolas Lodeiro set up one goal and scored an audacious penalty as the Seattle Sounders maintained their 100 per cent start to the season with a 4-2 victory at Chicago Fire.
The Sounders made it three wins out of three after taking control of the game with two unanswered goals in the opening 15 minutes at Chicago's SeatGeek Stadium.
Spanish winger Victor Rodriguez fired Seattle into the lead after eight minutes, tucking away a low finish at the far post after good work down the right by Jordan Morris.
Lodeiro then created Seattle's second, splitting open Chicago's defence with a sublime pass to Morris.
The US international striker still had plenty to do, but adjusted his body position brilliantly to steer a finish beyond Chicago goalkeeper David Ousted to make it 2-0.
Seattle extended their lead early in the second half when Rodriguez was bundled over in the area on 49 minutes, allowing Lodeiro to step up and chip a Panenka penalty in off the underside of the bar.
Chicago hit back with goals from Raheem Edwards and Fabian Herbers but Raul Ruidiaz's late goal made the game safe for Seattle, who now lead the Western Conference standings with a maximum nine points.
Minnesota United, who took maximum points from their opening two games, failed to draw level later after losing 3-2 away to the Los Angeles Galaxy.
Los Angeles FC, the only other team to make a perfect start to the season, face New York City FC on Sunday.
