Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk must surely go down as one of the best signings of the Premier League era.
Since joining the Reds from Southampton for £75million in January 2018, he has transformed Jurgen Klopp’s side from a defensive mess to Europe’s most difficult team to score against.
No club in Europe’s top leagues have conceded fewer goals than Liverpool this season – and Van Dijk’s influence was recognised at Sunday night’s PFA Awards.
The Dutchman beat Manchester City’s Raheem Sterling to win the prestigious Player of the Year award, however, not everyone was convinced when Liverpool made him the world’s most expensive defender.
No one is talking about his price tag now, and you might even say £75million was a relative bargain, but Manchester United fans did not see this coming.

Before Van Dijk had even made his Liverpool debut, some Red Devils supporters came up with a chant mocking their rivals over the money they spent on signing the former Saints man.
They even described the Dutchman as a poor man’s Phil Jones. You can see the video below:
The lyrics are: “You’ve got Van Dijk, Virgil van Dijk. I just don’t think you understand. 75 mil, he’s just a s*** Phil, you’ve got Virgil van Dijk.
Since then, there really can be no comparison between Jones and Van Dijk.
Jones has endured another injury-stricken season, while the Red Devils have conceded 51 league goals.
