Football: Belgium top Fifa rankings again but England on the rise, Singapore highest since 2017

PARIS (AFP) - Belgium hold on to top spot in the latest Fifa world football rankings released on Thursday (April 4) while England are on the rise, snatching fourth place from World Cup finalists Croatia.
The top three positions are unchanged with World Cup winners France in second spot ahead of Brazil, in third.
England move up one place on the strength of convincing Euro 2020 qualifier wins against the Czech Republic and Montenegro last month while Croatia, who reached the 2018 World Cup final before losing to France, retreat one place to fifth.
Germany, rebuilding following their humiliating exit from the 2018 World Cup in the group phase, are also moving up.
They rise three places to 13th on the back of their victory over the Netherlands in the Euro qualifiers last month.
Austria slid 11 places to 33rd, the biggest drop in the rankings, after Euro qualifier defeats by Poland and Israel in March.
Uruguay, Portugal, Switzerland, Spain and Denmark make up the rest of the top 10.
Singapore gained five places to 160th - their best position since 2017 - as other teams around them fell in the rankings.
Iran rose a spot to 21st and are still the strongest Asian side, followed by Japan (26th) and South Korea (37th).
The Lions remained sixth among Asean countries, behind Vietnam (98th), Thailand (114th), the Philippines (124th), Myanmar (140th)and Indonesia (159th).

Football: Philippe Aw, Fadzuhasny Juraimi, to lead U-15 and U-18 Cubs at tournies

SINGAPORE - Former Hougang United head coach Philippe Aw was named head coach of the national Under-15 football team, the Football Association of Singapore (FAS) announced on Thursday (Nov 17).
The announcement comes five days after The Straits Times reported that the national football body is shutting down its elite FAS Football Academy (FFA) programme - which began in 2000 and was then called the National Football Academy - with players to continue their development at the various Singapore Premier League clubs.
Aw will lead his team at the Asean Football Federation (AFF) U-15 Championship in Thailand from July 27 to Aug 9, where the Cubs will face Indonesia, Myanmar, Vietnam, Timor-Leste and Philippines in Group A.
The 41-year-old will also guide the team in qualification matches for the 2020 Asian Football Confederation (AFC) U-16 Championships later this year.
"I'm happy to be able to play a key role in developing the next generation of players by working closely with the clubs and schools," said Aw.
"One of my tasks will be to scout for promising players for the U-15 national team from the schools, clubs and academies as we implement a revolving door policy for the age-group national teams with the discontinuation of the FFA.
"It's a job with big responsibilities and I will guide the players well so they can progress to the top. I look to instil discipline, commitment and hard work in the boys which are values they will carry throughout their lives."
Former national striker Fadzuhasny Juraimi, meanwhile, will lead the national U-18 team, who also have AFF and AFC tournaments this year.
The AFF U-18 Championship will take place in Vietnam from Aug 5 to 18, where Singapore are grouped with Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia and Australia. There are also qualifiers for the 2020 AFC U-19 Championship later in the year .
"This year will be an important one for the players to see how they have progressed so far," said the 39-year-old Fadzuhasny, who coached the FFA U-17 squad last year.
"The two competitions will be tough but I'm sure the boys will be looking forward to it.
"The upcoming months will be crucial in terms of preparation, and clubs and schools play an even more important role now given the decentralisation of youth development."

Barcelona 2-0 Atletico Madrid: Diego Costa sent off in moment of madness after squaring up to referee

Diego Costa was sent off for a moment of madness which allowed Luis Suarez and Lionel Messi to propel Barcelona to victory over Atletico Madrid on Saturday night.

Atletico battled superbly after Diego Costa’s mindless 28th minute red card, but were finally prised open with six minutes left as Barca move 11 points clear at the top of LaLiga.

It appeared as though Costa was sent off for whatever he said to the official

It appeared as though Costa was sent off for whatever he said to the official

For the opening 28 minutes the game was a joy to watch with both sides committed to attacking.

Barca were on the front foot in the opening stages, though they had to wait until the 14th minute for their first clear sight of goal.

It was a fine chance when it came, with Jordi Alba striking the left upright after latching on to Lionel Messi’s lofted pass.

Atletico were pushing forward themselves but leaving gaps for Barca to try to exploit on the counter.

Suarez had a half-chance in the 19th minute when the ball rebounded off Diego Godin and sat up, but the Uruguayan fired over.

At the other end, Antoine Griezmann hit a shot straight at Marc-Andre ter Stegen as the angle tightened.

Messi sent a free-kick narrowly over before Jan Oblak denied Philippe Coutinho, who shot too close to the goalkeeper after being played in by Suarez.

Thirty seconds later, the game changed entirely as Costa lost it, squaring up to the referee and earning a straight red card.

Atletico were still trying to reorganise when a poor back pass from Godin almost played in Suarez but he could not capitalise from a tight angle.

Atletico dropped back into their shell as what had been an open game became much tighter. Barca were limited to half-chances for Messi and Coutinho before the break, but neither had the beating of Oblak.

The second half was slow to get going but in the 55th minute, Messi spun away from Koke and got his shot away, but again Oblak gathered comfortably.

Just after the hour, Barca’s talisman went on a long run before laying the ball off to Suarez, but his shot did not have the power to beat the goalkeeper.

Luis Suarez ultimately got the breakthrough

Messi then tried to bend a shot beyond Oblak, who parried the shot before his momentum took him beyond the ball, but he recovered before Coutinho could latch onto it.

Atletico got a rare second-half chance when Gerard Pique was punished for a push on Angel Correa but Griezmann’s free-kick was comfortably gathered by Ter Stegen.

Barca continued to build pressure at the other end, where Oblak had to make a double save, first parrying Suarez’s shot and then keeping out an effort on the rebound from substitute Malcom.

A set-piece gave Atletico another opportunity in the 74th minute but Rodrigo headed Griezmann’s cross over when Jose Gimenez looked better placed.

Lionel Messi quickly doubled Atletico’s misery

But just as it appeared Atletico were going to take a hard-earned point, Suarez struck a sublime shot to finally beat Oblak with six minutes left.

Picking the ball up just outside the area, Suarez spun away from Thomas and bent a shot beyond the outstretched arm of Oblak and in off the post.

In his wild celebrations, Suarez earned a yellow card for taking off his shirt, meaning he will miss the next match.

Atletico were still reeling from that goal when Messi made it 2-0 with a typical jinking run and low shot which left Oblak wrong-footed.

Bayern Munich 5-0 Borussia Dortmund: Bavarians seize back control in Bundesliga title race with emphatic thrashing

Bayern Munich thrashed Borussia Dortmund 5-0 to take over top spot in the Bundesliga.

The 100th league instalment of ‘Der Klassiker’ was a one-sided affair as Mats Hummels, Robert Lewandowski, Javi Martinez and Sergio Gnabry had Bayern in dreamland before the break.

Bayern are not going to give up their title without a fight

5

Bayern are not going to give up their title without a fight

Lewandowski put the gloss on the rout with Bayern’s fifth in the final minute and the German champions are now in pole position to reclaim their title.

Bayern were nine points adrift of Dortmund in December, but the Bavarians are now one point clear of their rivals with six games of the season remaining.

Lewandowski’s first strike saw him become the fifth player in Bundesliga history to score 200 goals, and only former Bayern favourite Gerd Muller has reached the total quicker.

Dortmund had the perfect chance to shock Bayern within six minutes when Jacob Bruun Larsen and Marco Reus combined to set up Mahmoud Dahoud from 16 yards.

Hummels opened the scoring early on

5

Hummels opened the scoring early on

Dahoud was unmarked and had the goal at his mercy, but he could only strike the outside of a post with the returning Manuel Neuer beaten in the Bayern goal.

It was to prove a costly miss as Bayern were ahead within four minutes as the former Dortmund defender Hummels headed home Thiago Alcantara’s corner.

Lewandowski, another former Dortmund player, doubled Bayern’s lead seven minutes later when he robbed the dawdling Dan-Axel Zagadou 30 yards out.

The Pole ran onto the loose ball and chipped it over the head of advancing goalkeeper Roman Burki to volley into an empty net.

Lewandowski bagged a brace against his old side

5

Lewandowski bagged a brace against his old side

It was a wonderful piece of opportunism and took Lewandowski level with Muller on 14 goals as the highest scorer in this fixture.

Lewandowski was denied the outright record instantly as Burki stood between further embarrassment for Dortmund.

Burki tipped a Thomas Muller header onto the crossbar and then denied Hummels and Lewandowski as Bayern threatened to score from every attack.

But Bayern’s third goal arrived after 41 minutes, Martinez sweeping home from the edge of the area after Burki had parried Thomas Muller’s close-range volley and Dortmund had failed to clear the danger.

Martinez found the net

The visitors were in disarray again two minutes later as Gnabry met Thomas Muller’s cross to score with a powerful downward header.

The second half lacked the intensity of the first period with both sides almost conserving their energies for the crucial games to come.

Gnabry fired wide as Bayern found late impetus and Lewandowski, at full stretch, sent his shot over the crossbar from six yards.

Gnabry added to the humiliation

5

Gnabry added to the humiliation

Lewandowski picked up a booking after being involved in a couple of heated incidents with Dortmund defenders, who seemed keen to rattle him.

But Lewandowski had the final word after he was denied by a brave block from substitute Julian Weigl.

Gnabry broke down the right for the umpteenth time and teed up Lewandowski, who had the simple task of finishing from a few yards out to become the highest scorer in ‘Der Klassiker’ history.

David Moyes: Former Manchester United and Everton boss’ odds slashed to become new Scotland manager

The odds on David Moyes becoming the new Scotland manager have been slashed to 11/10.

The former Man United and Everton boss was priced at 3/1 on Oddschecker, but they were shortened after a flurry of bets were placed on him to succeed Alex McCleish on Friday morning.

Scotland Under-21s coach Scot Gemmill is the second favourite on 11/8, while Kilmarnock boss Steve Clarke is the third-best bet at 3/1.

John Hill, a spokesman for Coral, explained that Moyes has quickly become the favourite after an influx of money came in for him to land the hot-seat.

He said: “We have been knocked over with interest in David Moyes in the last 24 hours and, as a result, the former Everton and Manchester United manager is now the new favourite to get the job.”

Moyes, who has also managed  Real Sociedad, Sunderland and West Ham, was seen in attendance at several Scottish Premiership matches last weekend.

He watched Celtic’s home win against Kilmarnock, St Johnstone’s draw with St Mirren and Rangers’ victory over Aberdeen.

Moyes has been out of management since he was sacked as manager of the West Ham at the end of last season.

He guided the Hammers to a 13th place finish in the English top-flight.
