Edin Dzeko ‘hung Stephan El Shaarawy from hanger on wall’ during half-time row in Roma’s dressing room

Roma suffered a shock defeat at relegation battling SPAL in their last match before the international break, and various reports claimed a row broke out between the club’s players during the half-time interval.

Stephan El Shaarawy and Edin Dzeko, the forwards, are believed to have had a furious row in the Roma dressing room as the latter was angered by El Shaarawy’s refusal to pass him the ball throughout the first half.

Roma went into the break 1-0 down, with Mohamed Fares firing the 15th placed club into the lead just after the 20 minute mark.

Roma have not commented on the alleged row, and a new report appears to have revealed what occurred during the rumoured half-time brawl.

Bosnia media outlet sportsport.ba say things were so heated Dzeko actually got hold of El Shaarawy and ‘hung him by a hanger on the wall’ of the dressing room.

Earlier reports suggested the row never descended into any physical action from either player involved, though Dzeko is said to have been trying to get to his team-mate only to be restrained by Roma players Federico Fazio and Robin Olsen.

Claudio Ranieri, the Roma manager, was reportedly shocked by the dressing room scenes, though he managed to calm Dzeko and El Shaarawy down before the second half got under way.

However, El Shaarawy did not return to the pitch for the second period, with Ranieri keeping Dzeko on instead – despite his wishes to keep playing both forwards.

Roma ended up losing, with Andrea Petagna netting SPAL’s winner after Diego Perotti equalised from the penalty spot.

The Giallorossi, who were knocked out the Champions League by Porto earlier this month, now trail Serie A’s top four by four points.

Football: Man City survive shoot-out to reach League Cup semis

LONDON (AFP) - Manchester City survived a penalty shoot-out to reach the League Cup semi-finals as young keeper Arijanit Muric starred in the dramatic finale to the holders' win over Leicester on Tuesday (Dec 18).
Pep Guardiola's side took the lead when Kevin De Bruyne marked his return from injury with a fine finish in the first half at the King Power Stadium.
Marc Albrighton cancelled out De Bruyne's first goal since April with a late equaliser to set up the 3-1 shoot-out win.
Muric, making his second City appearance in place of the rested Ederson, stole the spotlight as the 20-year-old Kosovo international made two penalty saves to clinch his team's last four berth.
Just hours after Guardiola's old rival Jose Mourinho was sacked by Manchester United after their worst start for 28 years, City could afford to make eight changes and still went through as they chase the third trophy of the Guardiola era.
No wonder City fans cheekily chanted "bring back Mourinho".
Both managers prioritised their forthcoming Premier League matches, with Guardiola making eight changes and Claude Puel seven, including resting star striker Jamie Vardy.
Despite all the switches, City had 87 percent of the possession in the early stages and their pressure was rewarded in the 14th minute.
De Bruyne took control on the left edge of the Leicester area, cleverly shifted the ball onto his right foot before unleashing a low drive that zipped through the legs of Hamza Choudhury and past goalkeeper Danny Ward.
It was a cathartic moment for De Bruyne in only his seventh appearance of a frustrating season ravaged by two knee injuries.
The Belgium midfielder was making his first start since being injured in City's League Cup win over Fulham on November 1.
Riyad Mahrez was making his first return to Leicester following his move to City in the close-season.
The Algeria winger almost doubled City's lead when he pounced on Brahim Diaz's shot and smashed a volley just over.
Muric kept his side's lead intact when he sprawled to the left to repel a long-range drive from Demarai Gray that appeared destined for the bottom corner.

MURIC SHINES

Sergio Aguero, back from an injury that sidelined him for three weeks, should have put City two up moments after half-time.
However, the Argentine forward shot too close to Ward after running onto Mahrez's pass.
Leicester drew level in the 73rd minute when Wilfred Ndidi lofted a pass that picked out Albrighton's run behind Oleksandr Zinchenko and the substitute slammed a fierce strike into the far corner.
Guardiola's men had beaten Leicester on penalties at the same stage of the League Cup last season.
Leicester had more recent spot-kick success after beating Wolves and Southampton on penalties in the previous two rounds, but it was City who prevailed again.
Leicester's Christian Fuchs and City's Raheem Sterling both shot over.
Muric seized the moment with saves to deny James Maddison and Caglar Soyuncu before Zinchenko drilled in the winner.
Third tier Burton are into the semi-final for the first time in their history after a shock 1-0 win at Championship promotion chasers Middlesbrough.
Sixth in the second tier, Middlesbrough made a host of changes and were punished by their lowly opponents.
Burton, 15th in League One, are the first team from the third tier or lower to reach the semi-finals since Sheffield United in 2014-15.
Jake Hesketh put Nigel Clough's side into the lead in the 48th minute, the on-loan Southampton midfielder firing home from the edge of the area.
Clough won the League Cup twice as a player with Nottingham Forest in 1989 and 1990.

Football Association announces Mark Billingham as new chief executive

Mark Bullingham will become the new chief executive of the Football Association, the governing body has announced.

An internal candidate, Bullingham joined the FA as commercial and marketing director in August 2016, with his role bumped up to chief commercial and football development officer in December.

Mark Bullingham will replace Martin Glenn at the FA

The marketing expert will succeed Martin Glenn, who announced his decision to stand down at end of this season before Christmas.

In a statement, Bullingham said: “This is an incredibly exciting time to be at the Football Association and I’m delighted to be given this opportunity.

“I’m hugely passionate about the role the FA plays in improving the English game and our positive contribution to society. Getting kids across the country active and learning life skills such as teamwork and communication is incredibly rewarding.

“I’m confident in the talent and determination of the workforce here and the direction we are heading together.

“However, there is still a huge amount to do: from transforming the quality of amateur pitches, to doubling the women’s and girls’ game across the country, to hosting major international tournaments, to building digital tools to help volunteers across all areas of the grassroots game.

Huddersfield Town 1-1 Manchester United: Red Devils hopes of top four finish ended as they are held by already relegated Terriers

Manchester United will not be playing Champions League football next season as they were held 1-1 at Huddersfield Town.

Chelsea’s victory against Watford meant a point was not enough to keep their hopes of finishing in the top four going to the final day of the Premier League season.

Scott McTominay looked to set the Red Devils on the path to victory with an early goal but a battling performance from the already relegated side saw them earn a deserved point.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer made three changes as Phil Jones, Scott McTominay and Alexis Sanchez came into the side in place of Eric Bailly, Ander Herrera and Romelu Lukaku.

The latter was absent from the squad along with Anthony Martial and Jesse Lingard, with David De Gea starting in goal despite calls for him to be dropped.

Huddersfield boss Jan Siewert also made three alterations, with Aaron Mooy, Chris Lowe and Alex Pritchard coming in.

McTominay fired Manchester United into an eighth-minute lead against relegated Huddersfield.

The United midfielder unleashed a low shot from the edge of the penalty area that Jonas Lossl appeared to have covered, but the Town goalkeeper misjudged the bounce and it ended up in the bottom corner.

An error from the normally dependable Luke Shaw allowed Mbenza to score his first goal in English football and give Town fans an all-to-rare reason to cheer as a challenging campaign edges towards its conclusion.

Paul Pogba hit the woodwork for the second time as United chased a late winner, but Huddersfield were able to avoid a record-equalling 15th top-flight home defeat thanks to just their 10th home goal of the campaign.

Those statistics highlight why Town were relegated at end of March and the work required at Old Trafford – a summer rebuilding job made all the more difficult by the fact that Champions League football will not be returning.

The Europa League awaits for United as Huddersfield prepare for life in the Sky Bet Championship, although Mbenza’s strike ensured a positive end to the popular Dean Hoyle’s final home match as chairman.

Both London clubs are planning to return thousands of tickets ahead of the final in Azerbejian

Arsenal and Chelsea plan on returning over 6,000 tickets leaving UEFA facing major embarrassment, as the almost 70,000 capacity stadium would be nowhere near full.

The location and cost is proving a serious issue to supporters, meaning Arsenal and Chelsea have only managed to shift 3,500 and 2,000 tickets respectively, The Times reports.

Travel to Baku, which lies further east than Baghdad and Riyadh, is also proving an issue for those fans who have qualified for a match ticket.

UEFA’s decision to award less than 6,000 tickets to both London clubs was originally met with derision from the footballing world.

Driving the distance would take upwards of 50 hours behind the wheel, while a train journey could last as long as four days.

With the cheapest flights – which include a stop-over in Turkey – expected to cost fans more than £1,200, the two Premier League clubs are not going to even sell out their small allocations.

Furthermore, Arsenal are also liaising with the Foreign Office after it emerged season-ticket holders with dual British and Armenian citizenship have been denied visas to visit Baku because of Azerbaijani tensions with Armenia.

Henrikh Mkhitaryan will not travel to Baku

Arsenal midfielder Henrikh Mkhitaryan is himself Armenian, and it was confirmed earlier this week he will not travel for the final due to concerns for his safety in Azerbaijan.

The decision was made to omit Mkhitaryan from Unai Emery’s travelling squad after the midfielder held talks with his family.
