Lionel Scaloni: Argentina manager and former West Ham loanee discharged from hospital after being hit by car

Argentina manager Lionel Scaloni has been discharged from hospital after being hit by a car while riding his bike.

Scaloni, who is best known in England for a 2006 loan spell with West Ham, was rushed to hospital after being struck by the vehicle at around 10am this morning in Portals, Mallorca, Diario de Mallorca report.

The 40-year-old was taken to Son Espases hospital, having reportedly ‘hit his face hard against the ground’ near the Agora school.

It is claimed Scaloni’s condition was ‘assessed between mild and moderate’, and it has been confirmed he has now been discharged from hospital.

Argentina’s official Twitter account released a statement to announce Scaloni’s return home.

“The coach of Argentina, Lionel Scaloni, suffered an accident today while driving his bicycle,” the statement read. “He is currently on his way home after medical discharge.”

Scaloni, who was appointed Argentina manager last November, began his playing career with Newell’s Old Boys in 1995.

The versatile right-sided player went on to represent Estudiantes, Deportivo La Coruna, Racing Santander, Lazio, Mallorca and Atalanta, with whom he finished his career in 2015.

He spent a short time in England with West Ham, joining the east Londoners on loan in January 2006 and helping the Hammers reach that year’s FA Cup final. Scaloni played the entire match as Liverpool beat West Ham on penalties at the Millennium Stadium.

The Rosario native also represented Argentina on seven occasions, including as part of their 2006 World Cup squad.

He was the national team’s assistant manager under Jorge Sampaoli, and took charge as caretaker when Sampaoli left after Argentina’s poor 2018 World Cup campaign.

Later that year, Scaloni was appointed manager on a permanent basis with a deal that runs until the end of this summer’s Copa America.

Lionel Scaloni has been unveiled as Argentina's new interim boss for their upcoming friendlies. A former West Ham loanee, he replaces Jorge Sampaoli who stood down after the World Cup.

Football: Everton ride luck for 2-0 victory at home to Bournemouth

(REUTERS) - Everton avoided a third consecutive Premier League home defeat as Kurt Zouma's header and a late goal by Dominic Calvert-Lewin earned them a flattering 2-0 victory against Bournemouth at a rainy Goodison Park on Sunday (Jan 13).
There were grumblings of discontent from the home fans as Everton were outplayed before the break but Marco Silva’s side improved after the interval to move back into the top half of the table.  Bournemouth have now lost six successive away league games.
â€Å“I think the result is really harsh on us today, we competed in a really tough game and we had some chances we didn’t take but the scoreline doesn’t reflect the performance,” Bournemouth manager Eddie Howe said.
â€Å“The fighting spirit and determination was on show, we pressed well and we nullified their threats for large spells.”
It was hard to disagree with Howe’s assessment, especially before the interval when his eye-catching side dominated.
Young Welsh striker David Brooks was a thorn in the Everton defence and he struck a shot against the base of the post in the 14th minute after being played in by Junior Stanislas, who himself nearly embarrassed England keeper Jordan Pickford with a free kick.
Bournemouth also had two penalty shouts ignored before Everton gradually roused themselves, with defender Michael Keane heading against the crossbar shortly before half-time.  Everton began to click after the break and Richarlison’s shot was cleared off the line by Nathan Ake.
The hosts took the lead with only their second effort on target in the 61st minute.  Lucas Digne did well to keep a ball in play and his hoisted cross was headed home powerfully by defender Zouma for his first Everton goal since joining on loan from Chelsea.
Everton’s second in stoppage-time, struck home excellently by Calvert-Lewin after great work by Ademola Lookman, was harsh on Bournemouth who will wonder how they went home unrewarded.
Everton boss Silva was especially impressed by the performance of 21-year-old midfielder Lookman who is being linked with a move away from Goodison Park.
â€Å“It was a fantastic performance and we know he is at that level, but he will improve more and more,” Silva said.  â€Å“Even if 2-0 is a tough result to take for them, we deserved the points and our players showed big personality and character as a team.”
Bournemouth, who had 16 goal attempts, remained in 12th spot with 27 points from 22 games, nine points above the bottom three. Everton moved into 10th spot on 30 points.Â

West Ham are looking to offload Anderson for £75million if he leaves

Anderson scored nine Premier League goals in 2018/19 and it seems as though his form hasn’t gone unnoticed.

Real Madrid were linked with the 26-year-old earlier this year but according to the Daily Mail, Liverpool are now plotting a move for him.

However, Anderson is not expected to come cheaply if he leaves the London Stadium this summer.

Bleacher Report claims that West Ham and Anderson have a ‘gentleman’s agreement’ in place which would allow him to leave for £75m.

Chelsea turned on the style to thrash Arsenal 4-1 in the Europa League final on Wednesday night in what is expected to be Eden Hazard’s final appearance for the club.

Hazard, 28, was yet again at his majestic best as he converted from the penalty spot and finished off a slick attacking move to net the Blues’ third and fourth goals of the evening respectively.

After a drab first half showing from both sides, Chelsea produced a rampant second-half display to blow away Unai Emery’s side.

Former Gunner Olivier Giroud broke the deadlock after converting Emerson’s inviting cross from the left with a brilliant header.

One soon became two on the hour mark as Hazard slipped a sumptuous ball through to Pedro, who in turn whipped the ball into the bottom right-hand corner.

And the game was as good as over five minutes later, as Hazard stepped up to send Petr Cech the wrong way from the penalty spot after Ainsley Maitland-Niles was penalised for clumsily bundling over Giroud.

Substitute Alex Iwobi’s explosive effort proved to be a brief lifeline for the Gunners, as the imperious Hazard capped off a slick passing move, linking up brilliantly with Giroud before rolling the ball past a helpless Cech to end the match as a contest three minutes later.

The Hoops still have an Old Firm meeting with Rangers to play on Sunday, as well as two games against Hearts (one in the Scottish Cup final), however Weah will not be a part of the squad.

He explained the situation in an Instagram statement which read: “To all my Celtic fans, I want to say thank you all for the undying support you have given me throughout my time with Celtic.

“I will be joining my national team to participate in the Under-20 World Cup in Poland.

“With this decision, the gaffer told me that it is in the best interest of the team that I collect my things and go home rather than be apart of the game on Sunday, so I’ll be on my way.

“It was a true honour playing for this club and also having the opportunity to interact with legends who paved the way for us.

“As a young player, I feel it’s an important step in trying to advance myself.

“I still have a lot of growing to do in my game and I am especially thankful to the Celtic family for giving me the opportunity to show you all what I am capable of doing once given the chance.

“To you the fans, I will never forget you for all the love, support and kindness you have shown me. I don’t know as yet what the future holds but I wish to one day come back to this great club to be with you all.”

In his 16 appearances for the club Weah bagged four goals, though the PSG loanee’s game time dwindled as the campaign wore on.

He concluded: “I will forever miss you chanting my name and hearing the beautiful song you have created for me.

“I also want to take this time to thank my wonderful teammates for supporting me every step of the way.

“It was really great playing with you all and sharing some really amazing moments that I’ll never forget . Thanks so much to Celtic FC and to you the fans for accepting me.”

However, the trip – which comes in a run of four successive away matches in London – has not proven particularly popular with supporters.

Tickets for the Wembley clash are still listed for sale on Manchester City’s official website, with an alleged 5,000 tickets still available.

City have sold 25,000 tickets to date, having been handed roughly 30,000.

The Etihad Stadium club also sent back a further allocation of 2,000 tickets supplied by the Football Association, as these were more expensive than the originally allocated tickets.

The tickets listed for sale range from £30 to £120 for an adult, and will remain on sale throughout the rest of the week.

It is understood Manchester City’s recent run of matches in London may be contributing to the lack of ticket sales.

Guardiola’s side’s home defeat of Cardiff on Wednesday evening was the only one of five matches in a row which did not take place in the capital.

City visited Fulham last weekend, with Saturday’s Wembley semi-final preceding trips to Tottenham – for the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final – and Crystal Palace.

This equates to four trips to London in the space of 16 days.

Furthermore, there are potential transport issues City supporters may have to deal with, as only three trains run from London back to Manchester after 8:30pm on Saturday.

The match kicks-off at 5:30pm, and the potential of extra-time and penalties could stop fans leaving Wembley until around 8pm.
